Instituted in 1922, the Park today extends to 110,000 hectares and includes Molise and Lazio. The section in Abruzzo ( 3/4 of the total) is in the Province of Aquila and includes the towns of Alfedena, Barrea, Bisegna, Civitella Alfedena, Gioia dei Marsi, Lecce nei Marsi, Opi, Pescasseroli, Scanno, Villevallelonga and Villetta Barrea.
The mountains of the park have various aspects of wildlife and are characterized by gorges, karst fields and plateaus which flank the lakes of Vivo, Scanno and Barrea.
The woods are comprised of Adriatic Oaks and Pubescent Oaks at low altitudes and of beech trees above 1000 meters. The flowering plants include the “little shoe of Venus”, the Iris Marsica, the red lily and numerous species of wild orchids. The mammals seen are the bears, wolves, chamois, wild boars, deer, roe deer, foxes, skunks, beech marten, and the Southern Squirrels. The birds seen include not only the eagle, but also the “poianna”, the “gheppio”, the Pilgrim Hawk, the Eagle-Owl. In the pasture, one observes the “coturnice” and the Cornish-chough, the lakes support heron.
